Ayurveda And Hives

Hives stem from excess pitta under the skin. Rashes are the same in this aspect. The Ayurvedic remedy is to provide cooling treatment both externally and internally.

You will find resources and remedies below to accomplish this cooling.

Let’s get into defining what hives are a bit more. Here is an excerpt from webMD.com from their hives directory:

Hives are raised red bumps on the skin most often caused by an allergic reaction. Hives usually cause itching, but may also burn or sting. They can appear anywhere on the body, including the face, lips, tongue, throat, or ears.

Hives vary in size (from the size of a pencil eraser to that of a dinner plate), and may join together to form larger areas known as plaques. Occasionally, hives can signal more serious problems, especially when accompanied by symptoms such as difficult breathing.

Next up is a short video from YouTube.com that was done by Dr. J Allen Meadows. Studies have found that hives may not be an allergic reaction. Interesting theory as to where they do come from.

External Remedies

Using a fresh coconut, break it open and apply the juice to the affected area.

This next remedy involves using a paste made from sandalwood and turmeric. Mix 2 parts of sandalwood powder to i part of turmeric powder. Add just enough fresh goat’s milk to get a paste type of consistency. Place right onto the hives or rash. The turmeric will cause your skin to yellow for a few days.

To soothe the area affected by hives, eat some melon. Then take the inside part of the rind and rub it over the problem area.

Internal Remedies

Cilantro is very effective for hives, rashes and insect bites. Wash up some fresh cilantro and chop it into pieces that you can put into a blender. Add about a 1/3 cup of water and blend. Drink the juice and place the pulp on the affected area.

This next remedy involves internal healing. Mix together 1 part cumin, 2 parts of coriander and 2 parts of natural raw sugar. Place 1/2 tsp. of this mixture into a cup of hot milk and let it steep for a few minutes. Drink this up to twice per day until improvement is noticed.

We mentioned that hives are caused by excess pitta under the skin. Following a diet that balances pitta can be helpful in addition to all of these remedies and is highly suggested.

The main food types to avoid are hot, spicy types. Also limit salt intake. You want to consume cooling food to bring down the pitta aggravation. You can use our Foods By Dosha Type chart to help you know what to eat and what to avoid.
